Today is December 21, 2012, the long awaited day marking the end of the long count of the Mayan Calendar, the end of a 26,000 year long cycle. Today we begin another World Age, the Age of Flowers, an era ripe with possibility for a shift in human consciousness towards a recognition of our essential oneness with each other and all of nature. Indigenous elders from the Hopi, Peruvian, Tibetan and many other traditions around the world hold out this hope for the planet at this time.
Carlos Barrios, a contemporary Mayan Ajq’ij, a Daykeeper/Shaman, shared this in regards to 2012:
“Our planet can be renewed or ravaged. Now is the time to awaken and take action… This is a crucially important moment for humanity and for earth. Each person is important. If you incarnated in this era, you have spiritual work to do balancing the planet…The greatest wisdom is in simplicity. Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness. Its not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It’s encoded in your DNA. All you need is within you. Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way.”
Today the hours of day light are the shortest of the entire year and the night is the longest. The December solstice marks our official entrance into the season of winter. Yet paradoxically, with the beginning of this coldest and darkest time of year, now one by one, each day grows a little longer, leading us into the miracle of Spring. May this be a metaphor for our future. We were confronted with terrible darkness this past week with the massacre of the little children and teachers in Connecticut. May we now collectively begin to turn towards the light and create a world in which we align together with respect for each other and all forms of life on our planet.
