Can you identify this herb? This is mugwort, gathered this morning on my walk around the reservoir. Right now, it’s growing wild all over Boston. Notice its feathery, silvery-green leaves that shimmer like moonlight - long associated with Artemis, the lunar goddess who protects travelers venturing into the wilderness.

In folklore, pilgrims placed mugwort in their shoes for protection on long journeys. One of mugwort’s most cherished gifts is its power to awaken dreaming:
Fresh leaves can be brewed into bedtime tea
Dried leaves tucked into a sachet under your pillow
Burned as incense to open doorways between worlds
Some even smoke the leaves before sleep to stir dream visions
These plant allies can support our inner journeys. Individual sensitivity varies - mugwort’s medicine can be too strong for some, and it should never be used during pregnancy.

I plan to dry these leaves and make a sachet for under my pillow. In many ways, during these uncertain and transformative times, we are all travelers journeying through wilderness. Mugwort may be just the guide we need.

Virgo Season teaches us that clarity is an act of love

One of Virgo’s greatest superpowers is discernment - the ability to see clearly and sort the wheat from the chaff. Maya Angelou famously said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

Yet time and again, I witness friends, family, and patients ignore the evidence right in front of them. They explain away harmful behavior, rationalizing why it’s “not such a big deal.” It’s as if they refuse to add up two plus two, and the result? They sign up for more of the same mistreatment.

I often find myself saying, “I’m surprised that you’re surprised.”

Virgo’s wisdom reminds us that discernment isn’t about being judgmental - it’s about being honest with ourselves, noticing patterns, and protecting our boundaries.

Of course, everyone makes mistakes and compassion matters. But as the saying goes: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Jackfruit is the largest fruit that grows on any tree, with some weighing over 100 pounds! It represents prosperity and nourishment. It’s the national fruit of Bangladesh and the state fruit of Kerala. One jackfruit can feed an entire family, which is why people have long planted these trees near their homes for good fortune.

Each jackfruit is hundreds of separate flowers. When you cut it open, you`ll find a honeycomb of golden pods that are both crunchy and satisfying, but not overwhelmingly sweet. I love the dried version - pure jackfruit as the only ingredient, with all its nutrients and fiber intact.

The jackfruit tree offers more than just fruit; its heartwood is traditionally used in Thailand to dye the saffron robes of Buddhist monks.

It`s called a therianthrope, a being that is part human and part animal. The oldest known carved figure, dating back roughly 40,000 years, is a lion-headed man, illustrating our long-standing fascination with this merging of identities.

Shamans across cultures have donned masks, antlers, or feathers to access the strength and wisdom of the animal kingdom, moving between these worlds during sacred rituals. The masks are not mere costumes — it`s a technology for taking on the animal`s power, its courage, its speed, its flight, its way of seeing, long enough to bring some of it back.

What draws me in is the liminal space itself, that threshold where a human being meets animal consciousness. The therianthrope is not a fantasy; it`s the oldest picture we have of what it looks like to merge with an animal being, to let a different consciousness move into
your own.

Tarot offers insights into this concept as well. The Strength card in the Wonderful Mystical Moments Tarot features a therianthrope—an image of a woman with lion ears and a lion’s tail. The woman is not merely taming the animal from the outside; she is already a part of it.

On August 28th, the full moon rises at 4 degrees of Pisces. And this one is not just an ordinary full moon. It's a partial lunar eclipse.This lunation echoes the energy of the outer planetary alignment from July.

The full moon represents the opposition between the sun in Virgo and the moon in Pisces. Virgo invites us to analyze, refine, and optimize, striving for control and competence, while Pisces whispers the truth that some things are beyond our grasp, in an unseen realm we cannot fully author or plan.

This tension resonates with the heart of the Serenity Prayer: the courage to change what we can, and the serenity to accept what we cannot.

Adding to this is Uranus, intensifying the energy and bringing the potential for sudden insights or disruptions.

Einstein wisely observed: “There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, and the other is as though everything is a miracle.”

In my practice, it’s common for patients to observe remarkable synchronicities - moments when the universe clearly seems to be reaching out with guidance or affirmation. Yet so often they’ll quickly dismiss it: “Oh, I’m probably just reading into it.”

They retreat back into the safety of consensus reality, characterizing such moments as “mere coincidence.” In doing so, they miss opportunities to experience magic, wonder, and meaning.

This is why I encourage cultivating a miracle mindset.

Recently, I discovered the work of medium and mystic Cheryl Page, who offers a beautiful approach. Instead of asking Spirit for specific signs (“Show me an orange butterfly”), she advocates saying: “Show me something wondrous.”

That shift is profound. It opens the door not just to specific signs, but to appreciation of the sacred that infuses our ordinary lives.

Since adopting this practice, I’ve had powerful experiences:
Stepping into my garden where flowers were glowing with such beauty it literally took my breath away

Navigating Self-Worth Through the Sacral Chakra

I recently pulled a card from an oracle deck built around the chakras. This card is tied to the sacral chakra and self-worth. It features a salmon chair, an image which I found evocative.

Salmon have long been a vital source of nourishment for many Indigenous peoples across the North, symbolizing sustenance and connection to the land. In the story associated with this card, an Inuit child repeatedly glimpses a chair that appears and disappears. When she rushes to tell the adults, they do not believe her. Exhausted, she lies down, and the chair returns. When she climbs in, she feels embraced by something called the “great servant.” No one else sees what she experiences, and she is met with skepticism, perhaps even told that she is imagining it. Despite the doubts of others, she knows her truth.

Self-worth is cultivated in these very moments, repeated throughout childhood. When we are believed, we learn that our perceptions are valid and that our inner lives hold value. When we aren’t believed, we often internalize doubt before anyone else has the chance to plant those seeds of uncertainty.

As we reflect on this, I encourage you to consider: Where in your life have you known something was real and trusted it, even before anyone else believed you?
